INTRODUCTION

Authors and editors Gillian and Colin Clarke are the daughter and son-in-law of Frederick Grice, and the editors of his books The Handkerchief Tree: The Journal of Frederick Grice, 1946-83 (2021) and War’s Nomads (2015). They also co-authored Post-Colonial Trinidad (2010).

Colin Clarke is the author or editor of eighteen books, most recently his trilogy of Caribbean research and travel journals – Post-Colonial Trinidad – with Gillian Clarke (2010); Race, Class and the Politics of Decolonization: Jamaica Journals, 1961 and 1968 (2016); and Mexico and the Caribbean Under Castro’s Eyes (2019).

Frederick Grice (1910-83) was the author of 20 books of children’s fiction, most published by Oxford University Press in the 1960s and 1970s. In 1982 Fred  published Francis Kilvert and his World. Shortly before his death Fred was preparing a memoir drawn from his own diaries, which Gillian and Colin have edited as The Handkerchief Tree.
